Japan's Disposable Workers

Ask An Expert

Is there any laws and regulations to prevent death by overowork?

“In Japan, the law to prohibit excessive long work hours is ineffective. The Labor Standards Act says work hour should not exceed 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. But it is possible to make employees work much longer than that. Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, set force “overwork line.” It defines the amount of work hours that could cause death by overwork. But it is not illegal to make employees work longer than “overwork line.” In other words, companies can kill workers legally.”
